The period was always the humblest of punctuation marks. Recently, however, it’s started getting angry. I’ve noticed it in my text messages and online chats, where people use the period not simply to conclude a sentence, but to announce “I am not happy about the sentence I just concluded.”
I don’t necessarily agree. I try to write as proper when texting so that I don’t become someone who answers in acronyms and text language in other forms of communications. (U wot m8?) I always try to use the correct punctuation. With our new phones, we have full keyboards and auto-correct to help us win at the art of written language.
But I do agree for the example above. Ending a one word answer to a text with a period would make me raise an eyebrow in confusion if I received it.
